Last Week’s Game
Last weekend saw the 19’s up against Vermont and with the focus on not letting the opposition get the early jump on us, our boys hit the packs hard, ran and tackled well to let them know it was ‘game on’. It was a dour struggle for the first 10 minutes with each backline repelling forward entries, and it was Surrey to land the first blow with a long goal to Lachie Martin to break the stalemate. The contest remained tight and it wasn’t until the last few minutes of the quarter that Vermont scored a major, that left us up 1.2.8 to 1.1.7 at the first break.
With the wind in the second, we were able to put some good passages of play together and with Hans Anjou leading the way we scored three goals to two to lead by nine points at half time, 4.5.29 to 3.2.20.
The third became the classic ‘premiership’ quarter, with Vermont having the aid of the breeze we needed to make sure we put ourselves in a position to win the game in the last. Great pressure from captain James Marshall, along with backline players Fin Hanna, Tyler O’Neil, Weshin Zeyto and Josh Hayes ensured the opposition never had a clean run at the ball and many times the ball was kicked out of bounds on the full under pressure. Our boys did allow Vermont to work into space a couple of times during the quarter which led to two long goals – leaving us down 5.7.37 to 6.7.43 at the last change.
So down by a goal at three quarter time, but with the wind at our backs the game was there to be won. With Anjou continuing to dominate and Tom Girvan and Tom Spangaro showing their class we managed to slot five unanswered goals before a couple late to Vermont to finish the match 19 point winners - 10.9.69 to 7.8.50.
It was a strong and determined game from our guys that will hold them in good stead for this week’s decider.
For Surrey Noah Bennett and Hans Anjou kicked two, while Anjou was clearly our best along with Paul Collopy, Tom Spangaro, Liam Mooney James Marshall andLachie Martin were our best.
The Grand Final
Tomorrow’s under 19’s grand final versus Donvale is at Mitcham at 9.30am. We’ve played Donvale four time this year for a 2-2 record, so this game should be a cracker. We’d love as many Surrey people at the game as possible to support the boys push for our first senior club flag since 2004.
