Senior Club Update
Last weekend saw the 19’s take on Donvale in the second semi-final and were under the pump early with the opposition jumping us to lead 5.6 to no score at the first break. The boys settled in the second and were able to close the margin to 26 points at half time, 3.1 to 6.9. Donvale were kept goalless in the third so at the final break it was 4.4 to 6.12, a 20-point margin. The boys dug deep in the final quarter but fell short by two gaols, going down 6.7.43 to 7.13.55. Tom Girvan was our only multiple gaol kicker with two while James Gray and Tom Spangaro were our best.
The reserves came up against Coldstream in the first semi-final at a cold and wet Walker Park in Mitcham. In a low-scoring first quarter, the Surrey boys worked hard against bigger-bodied opponents and were rewarded with the first goal of the match thanks to a long kick from ruckman Tyson Rattle. With the backline led by captain Andrew Venables (playing his 100th game) Pat Hatch, and Josh Brown working well together we were able to hold Coldstream to 3.2 to whilst kicking 2.1 ourselves to be seven points behind at quarter time.
The second quarter started brightly, with a goal to Nick Coad and a second to Tyson Rattle with only a late goal to our opponents allowing them to regain the lead going into half time – 4.3 to 4.1.
The third quarter was a cracker, with Surrey grabbing the lead early with a nice goal and with the defence continuing to work well we managed to hold the lead at the last change, 5.2 to 4.4.
Mother Nature took over in the last, with driving wind, rain and at times hail favouring the Coldstream end – they managed to score three quick gaols in succession and the game was effectively shot. While the record books will show a 7.8.50 to 5.5.35 loss, that does not really tell how close the game was all day and the effort our boys put in on the day.
Big man Tyson Rattle kicked two whilst Riley Tempany and Pat Hatch were named our best.
The under 19’s line up in preliminary final action tomorrow versus Glen Waverley Eagles at Mitcham at 10.00am. A win here will see us through to next week’s grand final and an opportunity to claim the first ever under 19’s premiership for Surrey Park. If you can spare some time get down and support the players at Mitcham on Saturday.
Junior Club Update
Junior grand finals were held last Sunday with the under 12 girls taking a historic first girls premiership for the club, beating Kew Comets 2.3.15 to 0.2.2. Heartbreak for the under 16 girls that led Park Orchards all day only to fall by the narrowest of margins – 6.6.42 to 6.5.41. Nevertheless, it was a great season for the girls and it bodes well for the future. The under 13 boys took it right up to a strong opponent in Heidelberg but fell short at the end, losing 5.9.39 to 3.7.25. All three teams should be extremely proud of themselves for their season.
