Senior Club Update
Last weekend saw the 19’s take on fellow finalist Glen Waverley / Vermont and ran out winners by 21 points, 6.9 to 3.6. Liam Mooney and Josh Hayes each kicked two and Tom Girvan and Tom Spangaro were our best. The boys finish the home & away season with a 12-4 record and on top of the division four ladders.
The reserves came up against Glen Waverley and pretty much controlled the game from the start, though coach Andrew Comello was right to point out at the quarter time break (despite us having all the play we only led by 15 points, 2.3 to 0.0) that we needed to be much more disciplined and stick to our game plan. The boys responded well and knuckled down to the task, recording a 91 point victory, 13.13.91 to 0.0.0. Returning to the side, Luke Jackson continued on his merry way kicking five (42 for the season ), also back from injury big man Tyson Rattle kicked two whilst Tom Veitch and Pat Hatch were named our best. The boys finish in fourth spot, with a 12-6 record and an impressive percentage of 222, underlying our ability to dominate against teams lower down on the ladder and that we have been blown away by teams above us. If we bring our ‘A game’ to the finals we’re sure to make a big impact.
Also up against GWH in a very close match the senior side got off to a bright start only to let the opposition back in and we found ourselves behind at quarter time, 2.2 to 3.0. Strong play in the second got us back to level at the main break, 4.3 apiece. With the ground very heavy due to the recent rain, the second half was set to be a real slog but to our guys credit they pushed hard and we managed to hold the opposition to just one behind in the third to take a three goal lead into the last change, 7.4 to 4.4. Old-timers at the club could not remember the last time we beat GWH (some though it had never been done) so we looked set to break the duck. However, it was not to be – in a reversal of the third quarter - GWH piled on 2.6 to nothing – so we are left to lament what might have been with a 7.4.46 to 6.10.46 draw to end our season. Graeme Johns, Justin Cuzzupi and Kane Henden each kicked two, while Dan Smart was again named our best (what a great first year of senior footy he has had) and Ryan Kennedy were named our best. So 8½ wins for the year and no finals, but the final analysis will show five losses by under 3 goals hurt us.
So this week we see the under 19’s take on Donvale at Mitcham at 10.00am on Saturday morning in the second semi-final. A win here will see us through to the grand final in two weeks’ time. We played them three times during the year, losing the first game by four pints early in the season then winning the other two, including a sensational come-from-behind win at their ground a few weeks ago.
The reserves play the first semi-final against Coldstream also at Mitcham on Sunday at 12.05pm. In the two matches we played against them this season, we went down by eight points at home early in the season and by 22 points in the return match at their ground, so we have a bit to work with but also a bit to prove.
If you can spare some time get down and support the players at Mitcham this weekend.
