Another couple of good wins last weekend with both Senior and Reserve teams getting the points over Coldstream, while the 19’s travelled to Ferntree Gully and although they led for most of the day they just fell short at the final bell.
In the 19’s, we started well with five straight goals to Ferntree Gully's one goal two behinds at quarter time. However, the second quarter was a different story. Ferntree Gully were starting to adjust to playing a side which was giving them more pressure and they began to hit their targets, still we managed to maintain a comfortable lead going into the long break. After half-time, the third quarter was a slog with neither side managing more than a single goal. While the boys tried hard in the final quarter, Ferntree Gully managed to score a couple of quick goals and with their tails up, they moved the ball quickly and hit the lead. Injuries to Inaria and Dowling slowed our momentum, but in the end the opposition ran out winners 9-11 (65) to 8-5 (53).
The Reserves started well after a big loss last week and led all day, including keeping Coldstream goal-less to half time, to run out winners 14-10 (94) to 4-6 (30). For Surrey, the Jones boy Dylan and Bailey were amongst our best and Higgins, Scott and new Player Hicks each scored two goals.
In blustery conditions, the senior team took on Coldstream that had a 34-goal victory last start. In a hard slog, Surrey did most of the attacking with little reward on the scoreboard. Toma, Westaway and Dishot were strong and in a low scoring affair we led 4-9 to 0.3 at half time. Our forwards started to get into the game, with Johns leading and marking strongly, Doidge running well and Cuzzupi getting into the game. At the last break we led 9-14 to 1-5 and Scott asked for a big last quarter. The big last quarter did not quite come, with Coldstream lifting their work rate and scoring four last quarter goals to our two. Eventually we ran out winners 11-18 to 5.6. Whilst it was not pretty, we’ll take the points.
Best for Surrey were Westaway, Henden, Johns, Hauser, Doidge and R. Kennedy, while the Goal Kickers were Hughes, Cuzzupi, Johns and Doidge each with 2 and singles to Moore, Matheson and Henden
