2nd Beach Wrestling World Series (Qualifier ANOC Beach Games)
I was able to submit our request and application to Palau NOC to send two (2) male athletes to compete in this qualifier being held in Singapore on 10-11 June, 2023. Unfortunately only Florian Temengil was the only athlete able to attend as Cristian Nicolescu was unable to participate in the games. This will be the last qualifying event forthe ANOC World Beach Games in which Palau has also requested one invitational qualifying place.
The Beach Wrestling World Qualifier got underway in Singapore where athletes in both the men and women categories attempted to qualify for the ANOC World Beach Games in August. Palau wrestler and Olympian Florian Skilang Temengil competed and represented Palau in the Beach Wrestling World Qualifiers in Singapore on June 10, 2023. This event was a qualifier for the ANOC World Beach Games that will be held in Bali, Indonesia. Temengil competed in a showdown in the 90kg weight division against Andri Vlasov of Ukraine. During the competition, Temengil proved strong but Vlasov was able to outscore Temengil and win the match by 3 points. Out of forty wrestlers that competed, Temengil ranked 30th overall while Vlasov ranked 20th. Palau may still have an opportunity and will try to see if Temengil may be able to participate in the ANOC Beach Games by invitation as NOC’s not being able to qualify an athlete may be eligible provided that they comply with the eligibility criteria.
There has been a lot of interest in this final BW Qualifier as over 110 athletes (47 women and 67 men) from 30 countries, including for the first time Australia, Bangladesh, Cameroon, China, Indonesia, Kenya, Mongolia, Palau, Singapore, South Africa, Senegal and Thailand, have signed up to take part as Beach Wrestling’s popularity continues to grow around the globe. There were some great results for debuting athletes and countries. Temengil was able to gain a lot of experience as Palau hopes to focus on Beach Wrestling since it’s very popular during the Belau Games. While Temengil may not have won, he earned ANOC Beach World Games ranking points to help him rank. The finalist in the 90 kg + category were Gold - Mamuka Kordzaia (Georgia); Silver - Richard Vegh (Hungary); Bronze - Modou Faye (Senegal).
