There were approximately 30 kids of all ages as young as 6 years old that took part in the 4 day Klaibedechakl Camp for boys and girls. The Camp included 3 sports – Wrestling, Judo and Boxing. It was a lot of fun and this was the 2nd year the camp was conducted. The camp exposed our sports to many of the kids in the hope of developing our sport in Palau. The camp was also organized to help prepare teams in preparation for the upcoming Belau Games.
Aside from wrestling and judo having exhibition matches, Boxing had its very first competition yesterday and it was a lot of fun. The competition was modified to two 1 minute rounds and a 30 second break in between rounds. The kids were not allowed to hit the head or below the belt, only body shots. There were 3 weight classes – light, middle and heavy. As the kids put on the head gear and gloves, it was exciting to see many of the kids box for the first time.
One of the main things to take away is the hope that our sports can be developed within each of the states when conducting their sports programs in the hamlets and to establish clubs for many of those kids that are not actively involved or too young to take part in other sports. It was a lot of fun for the kids and we hope to continue with this program again sometime this summer. On behalf of the coaches that conducted the camp and the organizing committee we would like to thank all the participants, team coaches, Palau NOC and states that were involved in the camp. We had teams from Koror, Airai, Ngaraard, Sonsorol, Hataobei and Ngeschar take part in the camp. Good luck to all the participants in the Belau Games this week.
