Thank you to the Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Palau International Coral Reef Center, Palau National Olympic Committee (PNOC) - Palau Olympians & Athletes Commission, Palau Marine Sanctuary and the Office of the President for organizing the first ever Youth Corps Summer Program. This program was created to provide incoming freshmen with applied learning opportunities relating to Palau's environment and culture. Students had the opportunity during the summer to apply learning opportunities through activities and engagement of our young people to our environment and culture in relation to education, sports and well-being.
The program kicked off on Monday, June 18, 2018 till Saturday, June 23, 2018, as students were split into groups to visit and take part in activities organized by each of the agencies. On day 1 of the program, students took part in sports activities organized by the sports federations from Boxing, Judo and Wrestling at the Palau National Gym. The participants had the opportunity to meet and hear from a few of the Olympians / former athletes as well as current elite athletes.
The sport of Judo, Boxing and Wrestling offered 2 days to the youth’s participants on the introduction and the health benefits to each of the sport. The youth took part in practice sessions and fun activities that helped them understand and learn new skills that we hope could bring about great opportunities if they wish to play sports. In addition, the Secretary General of the Palau National Olympic Committee (PNOC), Ms. Baklai Temengil, provided awareness to the youth on the importance of Olympics, why it’s important to promote and develop sports through programs and competitions around the world and how the youth can benefit from numerous activities that sport has to offer to all.
