On Friday, Nov. 21, John Tarkong Jr. was invited to speak at a workshop hosted by the Ministry of Education from 9:45 – 12:00pm. Attending the workshop were several PE Teachers and two of them were from GB Harris Elementary School and Melekeok Elementary School. I was able to conduct a presentation on wrestling and why it should be included in the schools. Both PE Teachers from GB Harris and Melekeok Elementary were able to explain and share their thoughts to the rest of the teachers on the visit we had at their schools earlier this month. It was a very positive response from them where they mentioned that the kids had lots of fun trying to learn new things for the first time. The PE teachers were also able to take part on the wrestling mat and we covered everything that is normally covered on day 1 of our coaching program - beginner coaching level 1. We were able to do stretches, rolling, drills and games on the mat. It was a lot of fun for the teachers since many of them were a bit out of shape but they did very well and were able to complete the activities. They were able to learn how to tackle, learn wrestling stance and absorb some of the rules.
Our plan is to take part in another workshop next year and to work more closely with the coaches in helping them learn and deliver their programs by next year.
Special thanks goes out to the all the PE Teachers and Mr. Dean Terry, MOE Specialist who was able to organize this event.
