Emmaus practice started twice a week on every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 1:50pm - 3:00pm. In a few weeks, there were major achievements. We went from having 4 students in the program to an average of 12 or more students taking part in the practices. All of them having fun and eager to work out and improve on their performance during practice.
In order to keep the students at interest in our program, we were able to meet the expectations of the students by encouraging active participation and ensuring wrestling practice were fun and exciting. We introduced new games during every practice session and were able to maintain the pace of the activities and not go too fast or too slow such that students go off task and become disruptive. Mr. Don Bukurrou, Emmaus PE Teacher, has been a big help in the program by constantly monitoring the students performance and providing reinforcement. The students clearly understood what is expected of them as far as mastering the skills or concept. The students are aware of their own progress towards learning goals. The skills and concepts are taught accurately and demonstrations were provided for skills and expectations for quality of their performance. The activities that we taught promoted maximum participation and students remained on task and motivated. All students were given opportunities to practice the skills over and over again. There were times when we recognize teachable moments and the moments to modify, add, or change the lesson content to maximize the opportunity for learning.
During every practice the coaching staff were able to actively monitor the lesson being taught to assess understanding of the skill or concept. This is done during guided practice, talking with Mr. Bukurrou and the students, assessing the practices (drills, lead-ups, games, etc.) consistently. After months of practice, the students are now familiar with the routines. Appropriate behaviors are reinforced consistently. Students appear motivated to follow rules and instructions. At the start of practice, the students area allowed to begin each activity (e.g. warm up, stretching.) on their own now with one of the students taking the lead and guidance from the coach. Students are actively monitored and closely supervised by both Mr. Bukurrou and our coaching staff. Every minute during practice is used for instruction reflecting the lesson focus and task expectations. Students are engaged in relevant, meaningful physical activity. The physical activity tasks are aligned with the lesson focus and expected outcomes of the lesson . I believe the progress we are making will help the school toward school improvement goals. I believe physical education contributes to the school improvement and department goals. Mr. Bukurrou keeps track of student attendance and performance.
Way to go Emmaus.
