The 2014 Micronesian Games were held at the College of Micronesia (COM) in Pohnpei, FSM. There were a total of 7 teams that competed during this 3 day event in Greco Roman Style, Freestyle Mens and Womens and the Beach Wrestling event. The teams included Nauru, Marshall Islands, Chuuk, Kosrae, Yap, Palau and the host country Pohnpei. Team Palau had a total of 8 wrestlers that competed to include Christian Etpison Nicolecu, Blesam Tarkong, James Kinto Dydasco, Gerome Petrus, Irakl Uong, Itungelbai Bells, Skilang Temengil and Samantha Rechelluul. Unlike the previous Micronesian Games held in Palau in 2010, Palau had a very dominant team but this year our team was very young and inexperienced. Palau’s wrestling team trained hard in preparation for the games.
Greco Roman Style
Overall, Palau won 3 gold medals (Christian Nicolescu, Blesam Tarkong and Skilang Temengil) and 4 bronze medals (James Kinto Dydasco, Gerome Petrus, Itungelbai Bells and Irakl Uong). Pohnpei won 1 gold medal, Kosrae 1 gold medal, Yap 2 gold medal, Chuuk 1 gold medal,
In the Greco Roman Style the team ranking went to Pohnpei who placed 1st with a total of 22 points, Chuuk placed 2nd with a score of 19, Palau placed 3rd with 18 points, Yap placed 4th, Marshall Islands 5th, Kosrae 6th and Nauru 7th place. Although the team ranking isn’t a part of the awards, it is being recognized based on the outcome and number of athletes that competed in the Micronesian Games.
Freestyle Mens
Overall, Palau won 3 gold medals in the freestyle competition, 1silver and 2 bronze medals. Christian, Blesam and Skilang won the gold medals while Itungelbai won the silver medal. Gerome and Irakl both won bronze medals. Our team did well and as expected given that we’re a young team. If we continue to work hard, train and compete more often we will be an exceptional team in the future.
In the freestyle mens team ranking 1st place went to Palau with a total of 31 points, 2nd place went to Marshall Islands, Chuuk-3rd, Pohnpei – 4th, Yap – 5th, Kosrae – 6th and Nauru – 7th place.
Freestyle Womens
In the freestyle female competition, Team Palau had only 1 female wrestler that competed in the 75kg weight division. Samantha Recellluul won the gold medal against Angeline Tom (Pohnpei). In the team ranking, Pohnpei placed 1st with a total of 38 points, Marshalls placed 2nd with 18 points and Palau 3rd with 10 points.
Beach Wrestling
In the heavy weight division, Skilang Temengil won gold medal. In the overall light vs. heavy weight competition event, Emelio Mike (Pohnpei) won the gold medal by forfeit due to Temengil not being able to compete since he was taking part in the shot put event for athletics. Temengil ended up settling for a silver medal.
Congratulations to all the athletes for a job well done.
