The 2014 Oceania Championships & Youth Olympic Qualifier (YOG) was held in American Samoa from March 21-23, 2014. Palau sent a team of 5 wrestlers to include Jarvis Blesam Tarkong, Gerome Petrus, James Kinto Dydasco, Franson Gibbons, and Florian Skilang Temengil. James Dydasco was our youngest and only wrestler attempting to qualify for the YOG.
Oceania YOG Qualifier & Results
Overall, we’re very proud of James because he gave his best performance and won a silver medal in the YOG Greco Roman Style at the 69kg weight division and he also won the bronze medal in the freestyle 63kg YOG qualifier.
Greco Roman Style
In the Greco Roman 63kg cadet division, Blesam won the gold medal over New Zealand while James Dydasco won the bronze. In the Greco Roman 76kg Cadet Division, Gerome placed 6th overall. In the Greco Roman 66kg junior division, Blesam won the gold while James placed 5th. In the Greco Roman Junior 74kg division, Gerome placed 8th. In the 84kg junior division, Rengiil won the silver medal. In the Greco Roman Mens Senior 75kg division, Franson won the silver medal. Skilang won the gold medal in the 120kg heavyweights.
Freestyle
The Freestyle competition for cadets, junior and senior men were held on the 3rd day of competitions. Palau had 4 wrestlers that competed in the cadet / junior division and 3 wrestlers that competed in the senior division.
In the freestyle Cadets 76kg Weight Division, Gerome Petrus won the silver medal. In the mens junior freestyle 66kg division, Jarvis Tarkong and James Dydasco wrestled in the 66kg junior division. Jarvis placed 2nd and James 9th. In the mens freestyle junior 84kg division, Rengiil Ueki was unable to wrestle due to injury. Out of 6 wrestlers he received the bronze medal. In the mens heavyweight division, Florian Skilang Temengil dominated his opponents to win 1st place for the gold medal.
Beach Wrestling
In the Beach wrestling competition Blesam won the gold medal in the light weight division, Franson won the gold in the seniors mens division. Gerome Petrus won a bronze in the light weight division. Beach wrestling was a lot of fun.
