The 2010 Oceania Championships was held in Apia, Samoa from April 7-9, 2010. Attending the competitions this year were American Samoa, Australia, Guam, FSM, New Zealand, Palau, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Solomons and Samoa. During the first day of competitions there were over 120 matches for the Greco Roman event and about the same for Freestyle on the second day. On the third day of competitions were the Beach Wrestling events.
Representing Palau this year were Elgin Elwais, Franson Gibbons, Radley Umang, Ismael Falig Aguon, Rengiil Ueki, Ismael Aguon Sr. (Referee) and John Tarkong Jr., Team leader.
2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Qualifier
The 2010 Oceania Championships was also an Olympic Qualifier for the 2010 YOG for Freestyle Male Cadets and Female Cadet Freestyle. Competing in the YOG Qualifiers were Ismael Aguon and Rengiil Wong Ueki. The YOG was only allowed for the freestyle competitions. There were also competitions were also held for Junior and Senior wrestling in Freestyle and Greco roman.
Coaching Clinic / Training Camp
Palau’s wrestling team arrived in Samoa on March 30, 2010. We were able to take part in the Coaching Clinic and Training Camp held from April 01-05, 2010. Conducting the course was FILA Instructor Ivan Ivanov of Bulgaria. The course was held throughout the day and involved lots of coaching techniques, physical training workouts, games, drills and activities. There were approximately 13 coaches that took part in the course to include Franson Gibbons, Ismael Aguon Sr. and John Tarkong Jr. There were also about fifty athletes including Palau’s team that were involved in the training. The training was also intense and exciting.

Cadet / Greco Roman
In the Greco Roman Cadets 58kg weight class, Ismael Falig Aguon won silver medal over Junior Anitelea of Samoa, but it was Ubanaba Tobire of Solomon Islands who won the Gold Medal.
In the 69kg weight class, Radley Umang placed 3rd with Guam winning 1st place and Samoa 2nd place.
Junior / Greco Roman
In the 69 kg weight class, Radley Umang defeated Lopi Taufaase of Samoa. Radley won silver medal after losing to Jake Bensted of Australia who won first place.
In the 84kg weight division, Rengiil Ueki placed 3rd after Alex Cumming of Australia (2nd place) and Faisal Attayee of New Zealand who won 1st place.
Senior / Greco Roman
In the 60kg weight division, Elgin Elwais won the Gold Medal over Ricky Welsford (NZ) and Frazad Tarash (Aus).
Senior / Greco Roman
Franson Gibbons defeated Samoa in the 66kg category but lost to Merhdad Tarash (Aus) who won the Gold by defeating Andrew Pown (NZ).
Youth / Freestyle (Youth Olympic Qualification)
In the 63 kg category it was Harris Fazlic (Aus) who won 1st place over Toe Seumanutafa (Samoa). Toe won 2nd place over Ismael Falig Aguon who placed 3rd.
In the 100 kg weight division, Manu Sualevai of American Samoa won 1st place over Rengiil Ueki of Palau.
Cadet / Freestyle
In the 69kg weight division, Jake Bensted of Australia won first place, Radley Umang placed second and in third place was Lopi Taufaase of Samoa.
Rengiil Ueki was injured in the match.
Junior / Freestyle
In the 60kg weight class, Haris Fazlic of Australia won the Gold medal, Ricky Welsford of NZ silver and Ismael Falig Aguon of Palau bronze.
In the 66kg weight class Merhad Tarash of Australia won 1st place over Jake Bensted of Australia and Radley Umang who placed 3rd.
In the 84kg weight division, there were 10 wrestles that competed. Ali Harmouch of Australia won 1st place over Alex Cumming of Australia and 3rd place winner Faisal Attayee of New Zealand. Rengiil Ueki placed 9th and wasn’t able to continue due to an elbow injury.
Senior / Freestyle
Elgin Elwais won 1st place over all of his opponents to include Ricky Welsford of NZ who placed 2nd; Shane Parker (Aus) 3rd and Andrew Pown of NZ.
