IMPORTANT STEPS TAKEN.
At the behest of the Mayor of North Tarawa, a meeting was held recently involving representatives from KAA and at least eight villages on North Tarawa. As a result, on November 6th. a Kids' Athletics competition witll be held on that island for the first time. The brilliant aspect of this initiative is that it brought together the elders of the villages concerned, the PE teachers from those local schools, and KAA - the main driver of Athletics in Kiribati. The KAA team indicated the events to be covered and how to prepare for them. Also it is hope that North Tarawa and other islands will be confident to hold their own similar competitions in the future.
It also recognises the acquisition and receipt of a set of Kids' Athletics equipment from Oceania AA in Australia, following the qualification of two KAA officers to teach using this equipment (as part of their Coach Lecturer status). This equipment will be loaned to North Tarawa for the occasion.
LEADING THE WAY TO GREATER DISABLED PARTICIPATION.
The latest move in encouraging the increased involvement in Athletics by the Disabled members of the Kiribati community was announced at a Meeting at the end of September in the mwaneaba of the Te Toamatoa group recently. Decisions were taken to provide further training and coaching of these athletes with a vew to their participation in an Oceania competition in Suva next year. This will build on the previous exploits of disabled athletes as mentioned in the attached piece.
