Competitors may only compete in the age group for which they qualify on the 1st day of the Championships.
Personal Performance Levels
It is very important to submit recent performances (within 12 months) to enable:
- Seeding for sprint and field events
- Divisions to be selected for track distance events greater than 1500m
Advancement Rules for Field Events
In the throwing, long and triple jump events, the best eight competitors after three rounds will be allowed a further three rounds. When there are eight or fewer competitors, all shall be eligible for six trials. Competitors joining the high jump and the pole vault after the start must commence at the height at the time of entry.
Starting Blocks, Vaulting Poles, Spikes and Personal Field Equipment
Starting blocks will be provided and private blocks will not be permitted. A limited number of vaulting poles will be available. Spikes longer than 9mm are not permitted on the track, however spikes of up to 12mm in length will be permitted for the javelin and high jump events. Crouch or block starts are not compulsory for masters athletes.
Competitors may use their own throwing implements provided they have been checked and approved. Implements must be handed in to the technical room by 9am on the day of competition. Any other competitor in the owners specific competition has the right to use that implement if he/she wishes.
Relays
Relay teams will be formed during the week of the Games. Relay entry forms will be available during the week and further information will be provided before the start of competition.
Disabled Competitors
Disabled competitors must note the nature of their handicap on the declaration form so appropriate arrangements can be made if necessary.
Blind and deaf competitors requiring assistance must arrange for their own attendants. Blind competitors requiring a guide will be positioned in the outermost lanes for races run in lanes to ensure that their guides do not obstruct other competitors. Deaf runners may watch the starting gun or may use secondary guides to indicate that the starting gun has been fired.
Blind and deaf competitors requiring attendants should make a note on the declaration form so arrangements can be made.

Competition Standards
The athletics competition at the Melbourne 2002 World Masters Games will be run under the rules and auspices of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), World Masters Athletics (WMA) and the International Masters Games Association (IMGA). The competition format will follow the World Amateur Veterans Athletics format.
Athletics Victoria will conduct the athletics competition.
Practice and Warm Up Facilities
All of the competition facilities will be available to competitors with a Games accreditation pass for training when not being used for competition.
Other Information
Athletics Deposit
All competitors who nominate for more than 5 separate athletics events are required to pay a refundable deposit in addition to their Games Entry Fee. The track and field organisers at Olympic Park will refund this fee during the week of the Games once the competitor has competed in a minimum of 5 events. Competitors that nominate for more than 5 events but compete in less than 5 events forfeit the deposit.
