About Olympic Park
Olympic Park situated on the Yarra River, is only a 10-minute walk from the heart of Melbourne and is also easily accessible via tram, train and car.
Olympic Park facility is of an international standard with a capacity of 18,000 people. The track is scheduled to be upgraded this month. Olympic Park features an accredited FIFA soccer pitch, athletics track and a range of hospitality facilities.
The grass infield is a first class event surface, while the run-ups for jumping and javelin events are of the same consistency as the track.
Olympic Park plays host to some of Australia's premier sport and entertainment events, including athletics and Rugby League at local, national and international levels. It was also home to the soccer for 1956 Olympic Games held in Melbourne.
The site was first developed for the 1956 Olympic Games.

* A new mondo track has been laid and installed in December 2004, in preperation for the Deaflympics. It has 8 lanes with an additional 2 lanes in front of Western Grandstand, with long jump, triple jump, pole vault, discus, shot put, hammer throw and high jump areas.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES
All race starts will be coordinated by an electronic flashing light system that is triggered by the starters gun. There will be a light system, starters gun and also a flag to start all races. The normal procedure of flags will signal a false start.
Race Start demonstrations will be on 4 January from 1000 - 1200, for all sprint competitors up to 400m and 5 January from 1000 - 1200 for all competitors 800m +. There will be a chance to practice with the new system during this time.
Competition Standards
The athletics competition at the Melbourne 2005 Deaflympics Games will be run under the rules and auspices of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), and DEAFLYMPICS.

Warm Up Facilities
A warm up area with a six lane straight track and jump facilities will be available throughout competition and is located adjacent to the Stadium.

Hammer Throwers
Yarra Park is ONLY to be used as a training & warm up venue, during the Games Times training hours, 1430 - 1630 and during the designated days and hours detailed for Official Pre Games Training at Olympic Park.
Pole Vaulters
Due to new security measures at Melbourne Airport it is recommended that you simply send your poles to and from Olympic Park via a freight forwarding company.
Should you choose to bring your poles as carry on luggage you may have a longer wait at Melbourne Airport.
Prior to 2 January 2005 any movement of poles from Olympic Park storage to elsewhere is your own responsibility.
All countries are responsible to notify the Organising Committee (M2005) of arrival dates and flight times via the questionnaire, which has been distributed.
Poles will not be allowed on any official Games transport.
Athletes must ensure their poles are
adequately identified. Athletes bringing their poles as luggage will be met at the Airport and their poles will be placed in storage, and transported direct to Olympic Park. Poles will be transported in one daily trip to Olympic Park.
Official Check In of Poles is from 10.00 - 14.00 on 2 January 2005. Please report to the check in desk at Olympic Park, located in the Administration area of the Western Grandstand. Any late arrivals will need to check their poles at least 24hours prior to their competition.
